Runner Highlight from Mile Split!

Archer High School's (GA), Myles Collins competing at the Foot Locker South Region meet last fall.

Mile Split looked to see who has had the most early-season improvement in the 5K from freshman year to senior year for the Class of 2020. We took the Class of 2020's freshman year best 5K times from Aug. 1, 2017, to Sept. 9, 2017, and compared them to what they've run so far in 2019 for the same timeframe.

Leading the way is Archer High School's Myles Collins. Collins ran a 17:02 5K at the Saucony Battle of Atlanta on Aug. 26, 2017, and he has already run two minutes faster as a senior at the first Athens Academy High School Home Meet on Aug. 31, 2019.

Spaghetti Dinner and Team Events

Hello Parents/Athletes,

This pertains to a few Cross Country traditions (like spaghetti dinners and secret pals) that our team has!

A spaghetti dinner is simply a gathering in which you carb load before a race. Carb loading is meant to store extra glycogen (energy) that your muscles can later use. It is not mandatory to carb load the night before a race but it would be wise to eat a healthy meal and stay away from foods that will cause future discomfort. In past years, our Cross Country team has really enjoyed having spaghetti dinners the night before to prep for upcoming races and it has become a memorable tradition season after season. Every Friday evening before a race, you will have the choice of carb loading with the team (which doubles as team bonding)! The managers will host a team event every month but feel free to host a dinner of your own or have smaller gatherings with your team mates. If you are interested in hosting one, please let us know. Click this link to know the location, time, and to RSVP for the First Spaghetti Dinner this Friday! As managers, we wanted to be the first to kick start and welcome you all so we tag YOU next.

Secret Pals is another tradition that the team (mostly the girls) enjoy. Basically, each participant will receive another runner’s name and a list of their favorites. The task is to buy a few items on the list (nothing over $10) and write an encouraging note without mentioning who you are. On Friday after practice, we will share "who had who" moment and exchange gifts. You will be given someone to shop for every Monday and exchange gifts on Friday. If you choose to participate, please fulfill your duties as a Secret Pal. More specific details will be shared soon.

This Saturday will be our first meet with both Varsity and Junior Varsity and we are so thrilled! Throughout the week, we will talk to the runners about packing a bag and what to bring to help prepare them.  Parents, we would appreciate your assistance with the snacks and drinks and if you take any photos please send them to us for our banquet sideshow. If you would like more information like the location or departure time for the upcoming meet, please read Coach McCartney's email.

If you have ANY questions or concerns, feel free to email us!
